Basic Things to Know
Starting your first class can be a bit daunting, and our goal is to prepare you as much as possible prior to your first class.
The following video does an excellent job of sharing with you some basics to get started!
Hygiene
We take hygiene serious at the Wincester Jiu Jitsu Academy – so that we can all enjoy a clean environment. Please keep the following in mind as you begin training.
-
Be Clean, Be Curteous
Consider showing before and most definitely after training. Please be conscious of body odors, as it may offend your training partners - you don't want to be the stinky guy or girl. Your gi should be washed after each use to prevent skin issues and ensure odors don't seep into the material. -
Nails, Hair, Jewelry
Please trim your finger nails and toe nails prior to training. They can cause scratches that can become infected. For those with longer hair, please consider tying it up with a non-metal hair tie. Please remove all jewelry as it may hurt you and your training partners, or become damaged. -
Wear Your Shoes!
When you step off the mats, please put your shoes on - whether to go get a drink of water or use the bathroom, shoes must be worn when off the mat at all times. If the foot bath station is available, please use that as well. Contaminants from the floor - no matter how clean it may be - can cause skin issues if carried into the mat. -
Wash Your Gear
After each and every time you train, please wash your gi and rashguard as soon as possible. If left unwashed, odors and bacteria can develop which can cause skin issues. Leaving your unwashed gear in a hot car / hot garage / in the bag is a terrible experience for everyone.

Mat Etiquette
At the Winchester Jiu Jitsu Academy, there are some guidelines for etiquette on the mats.
-
Addressing Coaches
You can refer to the coaching staff as "coach", "professor" (if a black belt), or simply by their first name. If a coach is giving guidance or instructions, please don't speak while they do to avoid interuptions or distractions. If you have a question, please raise your hand and a coach or assistant coach will be over shortly to help. -
Rolling Correctly
To keep everyone safe, there are certain things you are never permitted to do during rolling (sparring). Absolutely no biting, eye gouging, striking, slamming, or bending of fingers / small digits. If any of these behaviors are observed, you may be asked to leave the class. -
Sideline or Coaching during rolling
If your child is rolling, please refrain from providing advice and/or coaching during class time. Our coaches observe and monitor during rolls, and if they deem it necessary they will provide guidance. If you have a concern for something you witnessed during class, the proper time to bring up the topic would be after the class has ended.
